Most sea stars you’ve probably seen are just a little bigger than your hand. The Sunflower Star is huge -- 30 inches across. It has 24 arms (rays,) and those rays have thousands of tube feet (probably 15,000 on this one). Sunflower Stars prey on anything in their path: sea urchins, snails, crabs, and even dead fish and squid. The suction cups on the ends of all those feet are so powerful they can pry open even the largest clam shells to get to the meat inside. |
