The round part of this jelly is called a "bell." It often grows as big as an umbrella. The Sea Nettle has no eyes to look for prey, but it doesn't need any. Those long strings hanging from it are 20-foot long tentacles that launch poinson stingers into anything they touch. The lacy arms that hang down are called "oral arms" because they quickly take whatever animal the stingers have poisoned, and stuff it into the Sea Nettle's mouth. Sea Nettles eat plankton, larval fishes and other jellies. |
