Sand Dollar

The sand dollar you pick up on the beach is just a skeleton. The living one you see underwater looks very different.

Sand dollars are related to sea urchins, and have spines just like an urchin. But the sand dollar's spines are very tiny and have hairs on them, so it looks more like purple velvet. Just like an urchin, the sand dollar uses its spines to gather food (plankton). It also uses the spines for moving over the sand.

Sea stars, sea cucumbers and sea urchins eat sand dollars.
