Indian Paintbrush Castilleja spp. |

Everyone knows about leaves, roots and blossoms on a plant. But there is another part called a bract. Bracts surround the blossom, and look like leaves. Usually the bracts are green, but sometimes they will be more colorful than the blossom itself. Indian Paintbrush has bracts that look like paint brushes dipped in red paint. The actual flowers are not as bright, and are hidden inside the bracts. Indian Paintbrush will sometimes send out its roots to steal nutrients and water from another plant. |
