Killdeer |
| Charadrius vociferus | |
The Killdeer eats worms and insects in open fields and along the shoreline. For a nest, this bird will just find a little spot in some gravel or dirt and lay 4 eggs there. The small ends of the eggs point inward to keep them from rolling away. The Killdeer darts rapidly back and forth over the ground, stopping to call a loud, shrill kill-DEEE, then darting back and forth again. If you startle this bird, its call of alarm warns other birds, and they all fly away. |
