Black and Yellow Garden Spider Argiope aurantia |

Insects get stuck in the webs of spiders, so why doesn’t this Garden Spider get stuck in her own web? Because she knows which threads of the web are sticky, so she can avoid them. The radial threads (like the spokes of a bicycle wheel) are not sticky. The threads that make up the circles in the web are sticky. Each night this spider eats her web and recycles it into an entirely new web for the next day. Using this large web, the spider will often catch and eat insects twice her own size. |
