Black-crowned Night-heron

Nycticorax nycticorax

You might think the Night-heron looks like a giant seagull, but it’s actually a real heron. It has a shorter neck and legs than most herons.

This red-eyed bird catches fish at night, and sleeps in trees by the water all day. But during nesting season you might see it awake and flying in the daytime, too. It will be working hard to get enough food for its chicks. If you surprise a Night-heron feeding, you will hear a harsh, barking Wok! as it flies away.

Habitat: Fresh water lakes, salt marshes, grasslands.
Feeding:
Eats fish, insects, small mammals, and the young of other bird species.
Nest:
Twigs, reeds, fibers.  Placed in reeds, shrub, or tree up to 160 ft. high.
Eggs:3-5 pale blue-green. Incubation: 24-26 days. Fledge: 42-49 days.
