Dentate Stink Beetle Eleodes dentipes |

This slow-moving beetle is also called a Stink Bug. It is eaten by rodents, birds, reptiles and amphibians. It can’t fly and it doesn’t move very fast, but its name tells you how it defends itself when attacked. It stands on its head and lifts up its rear end and sprays a bad-smelling black liquid, driving away its enemy. Some mice avoid the beetle’s spray by quickly stuffing the insect’s rear end into the sand. Then the mouse devours the beetle, starting with the head. |
